Overview
Recent Visits combines a travel publication, destination and trekking guides, trip-planning resources, and an AI travel assistant in one platform. It starts with Nepal, and the content model is designed so other countries can be added later. Travellers can browse destinations, treks, tours, itineraries, and traveller stories, then ask the assistant to help match a trip to their plans.
The problem
Planning a trip to Nepal means piecing together scattered blog posts, agency sites, and forum threads. Recent Visits puts curated guides, planning steps, and an AI assistant in one place, and connects travellers with travel agencies when they are ready.
What I built
- Designed the product and built it end to end as a solo developer.
- Modelled destinations, treks, itineraries, activities, guides, and stories in Payload CMS.
- Built the AI travel assistant and recommendations on top of published content.
- Built a partner portal where travel agencies manage offers and leads.
Architecture & key decisions
- Next.js 16 modular monolith on Vercel — public site, Payload CMS admin, partner portal, and API in one app.
- Supabase for Postgres, Auth, Storage, and pgvector-backed retrieval for the AI assistant.
- Vercel AI SDK behind a provider abstraction, so models can be switched without touching product code.
- Zod validation, Vitest unit tests, and Playwright end-to-end tests.
